Emily Altar Serves- December 31, 2009

Emily has wanted to be an altar server ever since she made her First Communion in May of 2009. In October, she went to the training session, and then the waiting began. The new schedule didn't start until January 2010!

However, one day Mr. Murphy called to ask if she could serve on December 31st, the Vigil Mass for the Solemnity of Mary on January 1st. Needless to say, she was thrilled!

Andrea, the greatest cousin in the world, then called and asked if she, too, could serve with Emily. On the big day, Emily had all sorts of folks anxious to see her serve! Andrea helped her get dressed. She let Emily wear her necklace, too.

Before Mass, Emily was just a little nervous. She was a candle bearer, while Andrea carried the Crucifix. Father Nicholas was the celebrant. Emily had studied her papers, so she knew exactly what to do.

After Mass, Father Nicholas told the congregation that he was not the focus of the pictures, but our newest altar server was! He then thanked all of the altar servers for their time and dedication to the parish.

We were all very proud of Emily. Now she serves happily almost every week! Now, between Greg's duties as a lector, Children's Choir and altar serving, we rarely have all five Bowdens together in the same pew!

Merry Christmas!

We're really pretty bad about taking pictures at Christmas.

Happy Birthday, Emily!- December 23, 2009

Emily was eager to wake up on her birthday because she had been waiting forever for one of her birthday presents . . . Julie! Aunt Debbie & Uncle Scott had given Sarah an American Girl doll for her birthday, and they told Emily she could have one for her birthday, too. Emily spent months deciding which doll she wanted. She had a few in mind, but in the end, she went with Julie, a child of the carefree 70s. When it arrived in the mail, I hid it, so she didn't know that she would get it on her actual birthday, but she did! Nana gave her several outfits, so Julie was well-stocked moments after being opened!

This year, Emily finally began to appreciate the yearly letters from Aunt Chris. When she was born, Auntie penned "Advice to the Second Born." Then, each year on her birthday, Emily gets a new letter to add to her notebook. This year, a few weeks after her birthday, she asked where the notebook was, and sat and read each letter. She dashed off to write Aunt Chris back. I'm glad she sees them for the treasures they are!

Sadly, it was not all fun & games for the Emmer's big day. On your birthday at Camp Bowden, you get to pick where we celebrate your birthday dinner. Emily wanted to go to Outback to celebrate. We made plans to go see Nana B, and then we were going to meet Granny Gayle for dinner at Outback since Grandpa had to work. Well, when we arrived at Nana B's house, she showed us a very swollen and bruised forearm. We immediately took her to the emergency room, where Emily celebrated her birthday dinner with a vending machine hamburger! She was a trooper, knowing that Nana B needed to be taken care of first and foremost. In the end, we discovered Nana B had broken a tendon in her arm. It was very painful for her, but she is on the mend! We are just glad we were there to help out!

A few days later, we celebrated at Outback closer to home with Nana and Andrea!

Emily's Birthday Eve- 12/22/09

Since Emily decided to have a slumber party for her 9th birthday party, and no one over the age of 10 wanted to participate in that, we decided to celebrate her birthday at our Christmas with the Crew gathering. She loved all of her "Peace" themed gifts, from purses to shirts to watches and necklaces!

Christmas with the Crew- 12/22/09

Every year we celebrate at a Christmas gathering with Carol, Gene, Richard, Joanna, Michael, Lincoln, Jeff, Kathy, Andrea, and, depending on where they are, Judy & Clyde. We rotate houses and make deliciously sinful goodies to share while Sarah, Emily, Lincoln and Daniel open a sea of presents from our family friends. This year, we hosted the event, and what a night of fun it was!
